TOP 10 HIGHLIGHTS FROM 2018
Well guys, the day is here - it’s New Year’s Eve! The last day of 2018. This morning when I woke up, I started scrolling through my camera roll from the past year and although there were challenges and grief, there were also tons of really wonderful moments that I’m really grateful for. It’s so important to look back and remember what you overcame, the successes you had, and the moments you got to celebrate with the people you love most. The challenges you can leave behind. They’re in the past now, and hopefully they’ve just helped make you stronger. Starting tomorrow, we get 365 chances to make our lives better, reach our goals, and live happier and healthier lives.
So with all of that being said, I want to share some of the highlights from this past year! In no particular order, these were some of the stand-out moments from 2018.
In April of this year, I launched this blog with the endless help and encouragement of Haley Thuss (friend and fab photographer!) - I couldn’t have done it without her - and unwavering support from Kev. Since then, he’s watched every IG story, taken pictures, and established himself as an official IG husband (LOL) and has been 100% on board. I have to admit, it was scary taking the leap. There are so many what-ifs in putting yourself out there like this. It’s been a solid 7-8 months of learning, adjusting, time managing, crying, celebrating, and first and foremost- enjoying. But it has also taken off more than I ever expected within my first year. I didn’t do it because I needed something else to do- I did it so that I could try and show real life and struggles and successes of an average mom. I love being able to connect with all of you, share some relatable stories and thoughts, and hopefully inspire along the way. There is plenty of learning and growing to be done, but I reached some major goals with the blog and I’m excited to make and meet more in 2019.
Jase turned 3, and Bree turned 1
Some people don’t put much pressure on birthdays - I am not one of those people. I love celebrating birthdays, I think it’s so important to make people feel special and celebrate every year you have on this earth with the people you’re surrounded by. Birthdays have become even more special to me since having kids. This year, Jase turned 3 in April and Bree turned 1 in July. I loved every minute of planning and preparing for their parties, because I LOVE watching them have fun and feel so much love around them. I have loved watching them grow over the past year, develop new likes, interests and personality traits- and even though I wish time would slow the F down, it’s such a joy to celebrate their birthdays with them as they get older!
My Grandpa passed away
It may seem kind of weird to have this on a list of highlights, because obviously it was incredibly heartbreaking. I have been blessed in my life to have all of my grandparents alive up until this year - my Grandpa was the first I’d lost and it was devastating. The end of his life was very difficult on our entire family, but after it was all said and done, I truly did get to focus on all of the happy memories. He was in his 85th year this year, and although it was so hard to lose him, we got to celebrate all of the years we had with him. He left an incredible legacy and I feel very lucky he was able to meet my children and that they were able to meet him.
Jase started his last year of preschool
I mean, how is this even possible? 2019 is the year he goes to SCHOOL. What!? Most parents have this mini freak out when it gets this close to their babies going to kindergarten, right? Kev and I have been so proud of the way that preschool has helped shape him and come out of his shell. I stressed that he was too attached to me since I worked at home (currently going through the same with Bree) and he was always with me, and preschool really helped him socialize, make friends and learn how to be in that sort of environment. He’s excited to be going to the same school that his daddy went to, and we’re also excited (and really f-ing nervous) for him to start come September.
Bree started walking & talking
Year 1 of a baby’s life is a toughy - so much work, and so little sleep! But it’s also truly one of the best. She started walking and talking this year, and as you parents know, it’s so exciting and adorable when your babies start hitting these milestones! She’s a happy, chatty, energetic baby and has a TON of personality that has come out this year (aka she’s sassy AF). Kev and I both secretly love it though. It’s going to make for a difficult-at-times parenting journey I’m sure, but I love that she’ll be going out into the world with strong-willed traits. It’s been awesome watching her grow and hit these milestones this year.
Celebrated our 4th wedding anniversary
Kev and I got married on August 16, 2014 on a HOT and rainy day. There was no time wasted in our love story- we started dating February 2012, got engaged June 2013, married August 2014, had Jase April 2015 (you can do the math LOL), and Bree July 2017. Since that fateful day in August, a ton has changed in our personal and work lives, and he is truly the best teammate, business partner, dad, husband and best friend I could have asked for to go through it all with. Looking forward to what the many years ahead of us have in store!
Big changes on the farm
This was a challenging year for us professionally. A lot of work and sleepless nights, but also massive accomplishments that seemed like a daydream only a couple short years ago. We welcomed two Guatemalan workers to our farm in May, and that has certainly been a huge adjustment for everyone - it was a ton of work to get them here, and we feel very lucky to have them now. Looking back, we feel super proud of everything we were able to overcome and accomplish despite the many challenges - tis the life of a business owner!
Jase started skating
I know what you might be thinking - what’s the big deal?? This was actually SUCH a proud moment for me. I equate it to the amount of pride Kev feels when Bree or Jase rides in the tractor with him. I grew up in a die-hard hockey family - we watched it ALL the time on TV, and our weekends consisted of tournaments, games - so much of my childhood was spent at the arena with my brothers. So when I strapped a pair of hockey skates on Jase, I felt a crazy amount of pride and excitement for him! The first time he hit the ice, no word of a lie, he kept saying “Mom, I want a stick and a puck!” and I kept saying, “I know buddy, but you have to learn how to skate first!!!” It’s been such a joy watching him improve so far!
Redecorated some of our main floor
At the beginning of the year, Kev and I decided to redecorate some of our main floor. We ended up doing our dining room, living room, and main bathroom. We didn’t renovate, but rather made changes like light fixtures, changed out some of the furniture, decor etc. We moved into his family’s home farm almost 5 years ago, and we really wanted to make it feel like our own. I was really happy to incorporate some of my personal style into each space and it definitely feels like home!
Countless memories with friends and family
There are too many to count. We celebrated birthdays, anniversaries, Easters, Thanksgivings, Christmases. We had pool parties and barbecues and nights out and nights in. We laughed, cried, talked for hours, played games, went on crop tours, had dinners out, got together for playdates- all of these amazing memories with friends and family that we cherish every year.
What a year it has been. The highs, the lows, and everything in between. I want to take the time now to sincerely wish you and your families a happy and healthy 2019. I hope you set goals and reach them, I hope you celebrate victories and learn from failures. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for the support you’ve shown me and this blog since I launched. I can’t wait to see what 2019 has in store for all of us. Happy New Year!
