LOCAL VENDOR FEATURE - SARAH JORIS, FRONT STREET SALON
I'm so beyond excited to be able to feature this amazing woman and her new salon! I've known Sarah for most of my life, and she is an extremely talented, award-winning hairstylist. In 2017, Sarah was named the New Hairstylist of the Year award in Salon Magazine's Contessa Awards! This year, Sarah took an enormous leap in her career and opened up her new salon in Strathroy, Ontario! I had the pleasure of checking it out (and, of course, get my hair done) and it's a beautifully chic space! Keep reading to learn more about Sarah and her entrepreneurial journey!
Get to know Sarah - Owner of Front Street Salon
Hi- I'm Sarah Joris. I'm 27 years old, and I was born and raised in Strathroy, ON, which is wear I've now opened up Front Street Salon. I attended Marvel Beauty School in London, ON as well as Vidal Sassoon in Toronto. I then put in a year and half of assisting under someone, and then went out on my own. I love the training aspect of my job, and am constantly trying to learn new things. I've been to Mexico, Montreal and Las Vegas, all to train and learn new skills and techniques. I enjoy spending time with friends and family, although spare time seems limited right now!
How did you first get into hairstyling?
Growing up, I spent a lot of time with a close family friend, Jill Lucan, and loved the whole process of getting my hair done by her. I enjoyed talking to her about the profession and felt really inspired by her to get into it myself. It's pretty special to me that we can now take on wedding parties, work together, and do each others hair as well!
What does your job entail on a daily basis ?
Everyday, I come into the salon and set up, and then get to see clients for the rest of the day. I love that I get to be creative, and make people feel good about themselves, which makes every day feel really rewarding. I'm so lucky that I get to wake up and do what I love every day!
How did Front Street Salon get started/what prompted you to make the jump to being out on your own?
I have always dreamed about owning my own salon, and with the encouragement from my family and friends, I finally took the leap and just went for it. I'm happy to be working alongside a close and like-minded friend, Becky Myers. I think we make a great team and she makes a great fit at Front Street Salon. Also, the fact that I get to do this all in my home town makes it even more exciting!
What do you love most about your job/running your own business so far?
I think what I love most so far is being able to continuously learn and grow is the best aspect of my job. I’ve done many courses and competitions, and there is so much opportunity to travel with my job. I'm looking forward to my next course in Las Vegas in September!
I loved being able to design a space to accommodate my clients, and create an environment where everyone feels comfortable and relaxed. Lastly, I get to interact with people everyday, build relationships, and hear their stories. Everyone has a different reason for wanting to come in and get their hair done. I get to share some of my clients' most special days, and also share experiences with clients who come in during their hardest times.
How do you balance work life and personal life?
I’m lucky enough that my friends and family all make a point of coming to visit me at the salon now, and they are all willing to lend a hand. I’m fortunate to have such a great support system of friends and family who are understanding when life gets busy.
I want to thank Sarah for taking the time to give us a little insight into her journey so far! She has worked really hard for what she has now, and guys I'm telling you - besides being a KICK-ASS new business owner (and a wonderful friend) Sarah is crazy talented. There's a reason why she's an award-winning hairstylist who's in high demand! If you want to see for yourself, here's a couple of pictures of her amazing work. These are from my most recent visit to Sarah- and my hair was definitely in need for some freshening up (I'm down to only getting my hair done a couple of times a year, which is amazing - but when it's time, it's TIME). Anyway- check out this incredible transformation! I mean, how amazing is she!? I was blown away. I left her chair feeling awesome and pretty - and that feels damn gooooood when you're a mama who's normally on day 4 of dry shampoo!
If you'd like to check out Sarah's work for yourself, you can follow her on Instagram @hairbysarahjoris - or better yet, schedule an appointment!! Congratulations Sarah on an amazing accomplishment of opening your own salon - nothing but good vibes and best wishes for what has been and will be an amazing career!
